Osman Bektaş identifies new earthquake risk zones in Marmara region

Geology expert Prof. Dr. Osman Bektaş has provided new assessments regarding earthquake risks in the Marmara region, shifting focus toward specific fault lines and geographic areas.

Bektaş highlighted that the seismic migration along the North Anatolian Fault (NAF) may pose a significant threat to Bursa rather than just Istanbul. Citing research and historical data, such as the 1956-1957 Mudurnu Valley earthquakes, he noted that the southern branch of the NAF warrants close attention. He also observed that historical Istanbul earthquake ruptures between 1509 and 1754 suggest a seismic migration toward the east.

Additionally, Bektaş identified the Adalar-Çınarcık zone as a critical area for monitoring in future Istanbul earthquake scenarios. He pointed to a cluster of micro-earthquakes around the Adalar Fault in mid-August, combined with eastward stress transfer and seismic progression, as key factors. While stating this is not an immediate alarm, he emphasized that the Adalar-Çınarcık basin must be a primary area of observation.
