Osmania University researchers develop pollen-based anti-counterfeiting technology
Researchers at Osmania University have developed PollenSignum, a nano-optical authentication technology designed to combat counterfeiting. The system combines the unique biological morphology of pollen grains with the optical and fluorescent signatures of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanomaterials to create a dual-layer security marker.
The technology utilizes the distinctive size, shape, and surface architecture of taxonomically authenticated pollen as a biological signature. This is paired with the measurable optical properties of ZnO to allow for both rapid optical screening and detailed microscopic or forensic verification.
An initial reference library featuring 12 distinguishable pollen taxa has been established, which theoretically allows for 4,096 unique combinations. The patent, filed on September 19, 2026, suggests the technology could be integrated into various high-value items, including currency, security documents, pharmaceutical packaging, jewelry, gemstones, and luxury goods.
