Corinthians faces legal, financial, and leadership crises

Sport Club Corinthians Paulista is facing a multifaceted crisis involving legal, financial, and institutional instability. The Public Ministry of São Paulo has requested the preventive arrest of Vice President Armando Mendonça. Mendonça is a defendant in an investigation into the ‘shirt scandal,’ involving the alleged misappropriation of Nike sporting goods, which reportedly caused a R$ 6.2 million loss to the club.

The request follows the dismissal of IT Director Marcelo Munhoes, a key witness. Prosecutors suggest the dismissal may constitute witness intimidation. Mendonça denies all allegations.

On the institutional front, President Osmar Stábile has announced he will not seek reelection, citing the need to focus on the club’s severe financial reorganization. The club is currently negotiating with Caixa Econômica Federal to settle a R$ 630 million debt related to the Neo Química Arena, potentially by transferring the stadium's naming rights to the bank.

On the pitch, the club is in a sporting crisis, facing a risk of relegation and a string of eight consecutive defeats. Organized fan groups have met with leadership to demand the dismissal of football executive Marcelo Paz and the suspension of striker Memphis Depay due to poor performance. Amidst this, Clarence Seedorf has been appointed as the new head coach.
