Ossoff and Collins clash in Georgia Senate debate

Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff and Republican Representative Mike Collins met for their first U.S. Senate debate in Georgia on October 8. The candidates focused on economic issues including gasoline prices, healthcare costs, and tariffs.

Ossoff attributed high fuel prices to Donald Trump’s tariffs and conflict in Iran, while Collins blamed the Biden administration’s economic and environmental policies, advocating for energy independence and the strengthening of the strategic petroleum reserve. Regarding healthcare, Ossoff criticized Collins for supporting a budget package that could cut Medicaid by an estimated $1 trillion over a decade, potentially impacting over 440 hospitals.

The debate also featured sharp personal attacks. Ossoff accused Collins of having ties to white supremacist groups, citing reports regarding Collins’ son-in-law, a former intern, and campaign organizers. Collins defended his record against criticisms of his economic stances and his family background.
