Osteoporosis diagnosis and treatment gaps highlighted by health experts

Medical experts and health organizations are highlighting significant gaps in the diagnosis and follow-up care for osteoporosis. Data indicates that after an initial fracture, the risk of subsequent fractures increases fivefold. However, many patients do not receive adequate medical treatment or bone density measurements following a break, which could prevent further severe injuries.

In Germany, an estimated 5 million adults are affected by the condition, representing approximately 7 percent of the adult population, with women accounting for about 80 percent of cases. Research from the AOK shows that the risk of osteoporosis increases continuously starting at age 50, peaking among those aged 80 to 84. In the Rems-Murr district, treatment numbers saw a slight decline between 2020 and 2024.

In Switzerland, the International Osteoporosis Foundation and the Swiss Rheumatology League report that approximately 684,000 women with osteoporosis do not receive appropriate treatment. To raise awareness, the Swiss Rheumatology League has launched a national campaign featuring a new risk assessment tool.
