Osteoporosis prevalence shows regional variations in Bavaria
An evaluation by AOK Bayern, released for World Osteoporosis Day, reveals significant regional differences in the prevalence of osteoporosis across Bavaria. In 2024, approximately 324,700 people aged 35 and older in the state were affected, representing a statewide prevalence of 3.91 percent.
Regional data shows wide disparities. Bad Kissingen recorded the highest prevalence at 6.4 percent, while Freising reported the lowest at 2.9 percent. Other notable figures include Kaufbeuren at 4.28 percent and Ostallgäu at 4.11 percent. In the Augsburg district, approximately 5,400 people were affected, a rate of 3.22 percent.
The disease most heavily impacts the elderly. Among those aged 90 and older in Bavaria, 29.6 percent of women and 7.9 percent of men are affected. To manage the chronic condition, AOK Bayern offers a Disease Management Program (DMP) designed to reduce pain, prevent fractures, and lower fall risks. This program is available to women and individuals of diverse genders from age 50, and men from age 60.
