Osteoporosis prevention and bone health management
Medical specialists and health organizations are emphasizing the importance of early prevention and lifestyle management to combat osteoporosis, a silent disease that reduces bone density and increases fracture risks. Because the condition often lacks symptoms until a fracture occurs, experts stress that bone health should be a lifelong commitment rather than a concern only for the elderly.
Key preventative measures include maintaining a balanced diet rich in calcium, vitamin D, and proteins, as well as engaging in regular physical activity. Specifically, strength training is highlighted for its role in maintaining muscle mass, which supports bone health and improves balance to prevent falls. Risk factors include aging, menopause, genetics, sedentary lifestyles, smoking, and certain medical conditions or medications.
In Argentina, approximately 90 hip fractures occur daily, while the International Osteoporosis Foundation notes that one in three women and one in five men over age 50 will experience a fragility fracture in their lifetime. Medical professionals advise regular screenings, particularly for women over 65 and men over 70, to detect bone loss before serious complications arise.
