Osteoporosis prevention: Nutrition as a key strategy for bone health
Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease affecting an estimated 500 million people worldwide. While diagnosis often occurs after age 50, bone degradation begins much earlier in life.
In Italy, approximately five million people are estimated to be affected, with roughly 80 percent of those cases being women following menopause. Experts suggest that investing in bone health through nutrition during younger years is the most effective preventive strategy.
Key nutrients for maintaining bone density and reducing fracture risk include calcium, vitamin D, proteins, magnesium, vitamin K, phosphorus, and zinc. While calcium is essential, vitamin D plays a critical role by enabling the body to utilize calcium. A deficiency in vitamin D can lead to muscle weakness and an increased risk of falls and fractures. Dairy products are highlighted as a primary source of calcium, with a 200ml glass of milk providing approximately 260mg of the mineral.
