Rewe approved to acquire 38 Tegut supermarkets

The German Federal Cartel Office has approved the acquisition of 38 Tegut supermarkets by the Rewe Group. This decision is part of a larger divestment process by the Swiss cooperative Migros, which is withdrawing from the German retail market.

To prevent a significant deterioration of competitive conditions in specific regions, Rewe has committed to a four-year ban on acquiring two specific Tegut locations in Marburg and Schlüchtern. The regulator noted that the acquisition will increase Rewe's nationwide procurement volume by less than 0.2 percent, meaning it is unlikely to significantly impede effective competition in procurement markets.

The German grocery retail sector remains highly concentrated, with four major players—Rewe, Edeka, Aldi, and Lidl/Kaufland—accounting for more than 90 percent of total turnover. While Edeka was previously permitted to acquire 178 Tegut locations under similar conditions, the organic retailer Vollcorner has filed a legal complaint against that specific deal.
