Ostia beach cabins to be demolished following summer season

The Municipality of Rome has ordered the demolition of removable beach cabins in Ostia following the end of the summer season on September 30. This decision, which is a condition for the temporary renewal of beach club concessions, has sparked significant public debate. Supporters, such as the association Mare Libero, argue the move is necessary to protect the environment and ensure public access to the shoreline, citing damage caused by fixed structures.

Conversely, many long-term users and local business operators have expressed concern over the loss of historical beach amenities. The transition is also impacting specific sites like 'The Village,' a facility previously confiscated from organized crime. Managed by a network of social cooperatives including Il Melograno, the site has undergone recent demolitions and is working to integrate vulnerable populations, such as individuals with disabilities and those from prison backgrounds, into its workforce despite operational challenges caused by the ongoing structural changes.
