Ostia Paraplegic Center implements new protocol for pressure injuries
The Gennaro di Rosa Paraplegic Center (CPO) in Ostia has validated a new multidisciplinary protocol designed to treat and prevent pressure injuries (Ldp). These injuries, caused by tissue compression from medical devices or wheelchair use, frequently affect individuals with spinal cord injuries due to immobility and lack of sensation. More than 75% of these lesions in spinal cord injury patients occur in the pelvic region.
Plastic surgeon Sabina Staccioli warns that without timely and correct intervention, these lesions can rapidly deepen to reach the underlying bone. Such complications can lead to severe health issues, including osteomyelitis, sepsis, and, in rare cases, cancerous transformations. The CPO is one of only four or five specialized centers in Italy capable of addressing these specific medical challenges.
