Ostrava public transport contactless revenues exceed 190 million CZK

Contactless payments in Ostrava's public transport system exceeded 190 million CZK last year, representing a nearly fivefold increase compared to 2017, when revenues were approximately 40 million CZK. According to Dopravní podnik Ostrava (DPO) spokesperson Tereza Šnoblová, the number of annual tickets purchased via contactless methods has grown from 2.2 million in 2017 to a steady average of 6.5 million per year.

DPO was the first transport company in the Czech Republic to introduce contactless payment terminals. The system utilizes daily tariff optimization, where passengers tap their cards upon boarding and software calculates the most cost-effective fare at the end of the day, ensuring the total does not exceed the price of a 24-hour ticket. This technology allowed Ostrava to become the first city in the country to completely abolish paper tickets in 2020.

General Manager Daniel Morys noted that during the summer holidays this year, the system surpassed 100 million card taps. DPO plans to continue investing in digitalization, with future upgrades including more powerful hardware and a new generation of validators.
