Ostrava to treat 650 trees to combat mistletoe infestation

The city of Ostrava is launching a new phase of its systematic program to combat European mistletoe, a semi-parasitic plant that threatens urban greenery by absorbing nutrients and water from host trees. The upcoming stage, which will involve treating approximately 644 to 650 trees, is scheduled to begin during the upcoming vegetation dormancy period and will continue through the end of next year.

This fifth stage of the project is estimated to cost 4.8 million CZK (excluding VAT). Arborists from Ostrava City Forests and Greenery will focus their efforts on the districts of Moravská Ostrava and Přívoz, Hrabová, and Ostrava-Jih. The work includes not only the removal of the mistletoe but also comprehensive care such as health pruning to ensure the safety and condition of the trees.

Since the program began in 2022, specialists have treated nearly 1,700 trees, representing a total investment of approximately 12.5 million CZK. The initiative targets parks, street lines, housing estates, and municipal cemeteries where tree replacement is difficult due to spatial constraints.
