Ostrog Monastery attracts pilgrims seeking the relics of Saint Basil

Ostrog Monastery, a major Orthodox sanctuary in the Balkans, continues to draw pilgrims from Montenegro, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and around the world. Located high in the Ostroška greda between Nikšić and Podgorica, the monastery consists of both Lower and Upper sections, with the Upper monastery carved into a near-vertical cliff.

Visitors primarily seek to venerate the relics of Saint Basil of Ostrog, a 17th-century figure whose cult has persisted for centuries. Pilgrims often arrive by vehicle or on foot, sometimes traveling hundreds of kilometers to reach the site. Tradition suggests that while visitors should bring their burdens and prayers to Saint Basil, they should not leave the monastery carrying the same spiritual weight.

There is no specific formula for prayer; instead, the practice emphasizes sincere prayer and respect for the sanctity of the site. During peak times, such as holidays, pilgrims typically offer brief prayers before the reliquary to accommodate the large crowds.
