Ostrówki to host funeral for 55 Volhynia massacre victims

A funeral ceremony is scheduled for August 30 in Ostrówki, Ukraine, to bury 55 Polish victims of the Volhynia massacre. The remains, which include 26 children, were recovered during exhumation efforts conducted between July 13 and August 7, 2026. The work was carried out by specialists from the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), the University of Medical Sciences in Wrocław, and other partners.

Of the 55 individuals recovered, 48 were found in a mass grave at a former farm in Wola Ostrowiecka, six were found near a former school in Ostrówki, and one woman was found in a forest grave. The ceremony marks the 83rd anniversary of the 1943 attacks by the Ukrainian Insurgent Army.

While these findings offer hope for further identification, experts note significant challenges for future work. There are currently 14 pending applications from the IPN in Kyiv. Challenges include securing permits, funding, burial locations, and the handling of recovered artifacts. Historians estimate that approximately 300 victims from this specific area still await discovery, though some researchers suggest thousands of potential murder sites remain across the region.
