Ostuni: 70-year-old man killed by lightning strike while fishing

A 70-year-old man, identified as Marco Galantino, died after being struck by lightning while fishing on the rocks in the Santa Lucia area near Ostuni, in the province of Brindisi, Italy.

According to initial investigations by local police, the lightning strike reportedly hit the tip of the fishing rod Galantino was holding. The impact allegedly threw him against the rocks, potentially causing a traumatic head injury. While emergency medical services arrived promptly and attempted resuscitation, the man could not be saved.

A friend who was fishing alongside him was present during the sudden storm but remained physically uninjured, though reportedly in a state of shock. Authorities are currently working to determine whether the primary cause of death was the direct electrical discharge or the subsequent fall onto the rocks.
