Osun-Osogbo Festival draws 500,000 devotees in Nigeria

The 600‑year‑old Osun‑Osogbo Festival in Osogbo, Nigeria, reached its grand finale on 7 August 2026, attracting more than 500,000 local and international participants. The UNESCO‑protected Osun Sacred Grove hosted a mile‑long procession from the Ataoja’s palace to the main shrine, with the 10‑year‑old Arugba, Princess Alimot Moredeke Ajoke Osunbunmi, carrying the ceremonial calabash. The event blended tradition with modern elements, featuring a live photography exhibition by leading Nigerian photographers, high‑fashion attire, and viral social‑media coverage.

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke praised the monarch, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun Oyetunji (Larooye II, Ataoja of Osogbo), the priestess Iya Osun and the festival’s organizers, calling the celebration a priceless cultural heritage that promotes tourism, cultural diplomacy and economic opportunity. He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to protect the Osun Sacred Grove and support initiatives that sustain the festival’s global profile.
