Osun River flooding and erosion damage communities in Osogbo
Heavy rainfall in Osogbo, Osun State, has caused the Osun River to rise, flooding residential compounds and farmlands. Residents living near the riverbanks have begun evacuating belongings and valuables to safer locations due to concerns that water levels may continue to rise. The flooding has also impacted local agriculture, with water covering portions of cultivated areas and threatening crop investments.
In the Aratumi community of the Akede-Iyaloja area, erosion following torrential rain has washed away a bridge that serves as the primary link to the express road. The damage has created hazardous conditions, including a reported incident where a motorcyclist fell into the river while attempting to cross. Residents have improvised a narrow wooden pedestrian bridge, but they expressed concerns regarding its stability. Local community members have appealed to Governor Ademola Adeleke to intervene and reconstruct the bridge to restore safe access.
