Osun State Government disputes ASUU over UNIOSUN governance

The Osun State Government has rejected claims by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) regarding the legal governance of Osun State University (UNIOSUN). ASUU contends that the university's governance is subject to the federal Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) Act, 2012. However, the state government maintains that UNIOSUN is governed by its own specific Establishment Law enacted by the Osun State House of Assembly.

The dispute centers on the two-year tenure extension granted to Vice-Chancellor Prof. Clement Adebooye by Governor Ademola Adeleke. ASUU has declared this extension a violation of university law and has mobilized its UNIOSUN branch to address the alleged infraction. In response, the Southern Youth Forum has urged both the union and the government to engage in dialogue to prevent negative impacts on students.

Regarding staff welfare, the state government defended its record, stating it implemented the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement at UNIOSUN ahead of the federal government and has commenced payment of arrears. The government characterized ASUU’s exclusion of Osun from lists of states commended for agreement implementation as “mischievous and inexplicable.”
