Osun State Governor orders inquest into Ikire killings

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has issued an executive order establishing a coroner’s inquest to investigate the violence, shootings, and killings reported at Naira and Kobo Junction in Ikire on August 24, 2026.

The panel, which took effect on August 31, is tasked with determining the number of victims, identifying the causes of the violence, and examining the role of security operatives. The inquiry will specifically investigate whether the use of live ammunition or other weapons complied with legal rules of engagement and human rights standards.

Magistrate Ayokunle Shiyanbola has been appointed as Chairman of the panel, with Abiodun Badiora serving as Secretary. The committee includes a retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, a representative from the Nigerian Bar Association, civil society and community representatives, and a medical/forensic expert.

The panel is empowered to summon witnesses, demand police and medical records, and inspect the scene. It has the authority to identify any individuals, security personnel, political actors, or transport union members whose actions or omissions contributed to the incident. Based on its findings, the panel may recommend prosecutions, disciplinary measures, victim compensation, or institutional reforms.
