Oswego residents assist fugitives during Border Patrol standoff

A seven-hour standoff occurred in Oswego, New York, after two men fleeing U.S. Border Patrol agents climbed onto the roof of a residence on 7th Street. The incident began Wednesday afternoon following a vehicle pursuit after federal agents attempted to serve judicial warrants on the individuals.

During the standoff, a crowd of approximately 50 to 70 residents and activists gathered, chanting for the agents to let the men go. Footage and reports indicate that protesters harassed law enforcement and media, with some residents reportedly assisting one of the fugitives by lifting him down from a roof ledge to safety. The suspects eventually escaped in waiting vehicles.

As a precaution, the Charles E. Riley Elementary School was placed under a lockout while law enforcement investigated the surrounding area. Oswego Mayor Robert Corradino confirmed the federal warrants were part of an immigration enforcement operation. Local police stated they did not assist in arrests related to the Border Patrol investigation.
