Otaru tire detachment accident highlights vehicle maintenance risks
A light vehicle in Otaru, Hokkaido, experienced a front left wheel detachment while driving on the morning of October 28. The tire rolled approximately 30 meters before colliding with an unoccupied parked vehicle. No injuries were reported.
The driver had performed a DIY switch to winter tires the previous day. Following an inspection, authorities discovered that the wheel nuts on the remaining three wheels had been installed facing the wrong direction. The driver reported hearing a rattling noise upon departure but continued driving until the wheel detached.
Experts note that modern vehicle trends, such as the rise of heavy Electric Vehicles (EVs) and large SUVs, increase tire wear due to higher curb weights and instant motor torque. There is a particular warning regarding ‘inner wear’ (uneven wear on the inside of the tire), which is often invisible to the naked eye and requires professional lift inspection to detect. Drivers are advised to use torque wrenches for DIY changes and to seek professional assistance if unusual vibrations or noises occur.
