Otavalo Yamor 2026 festivities face economic boost and vendor protests
The Yamor 2026 festivities in Otavalo are driving local economic activity through tourism, restaurants, and various service sectors. The municipal government has deployed cleaning crews and coordinated with security and private entities to manage the large-scale celebrations.
However, the 593 Expo Yamor has faced significant criticism from participants. Approximately 200 entrepreneurs reportedly paid between $250 and $350 for stalls, but only about 35 remain installed at the San Sebastián park esplanade. Commercially active participants have complained about inadequate conditions, including exposure to dust and wind, and a lack of essential services such as tents, water, and sanitary facilities.
In response to these grievances, the Otavalo Mayor's Office suggested relocating the remaining vendors to Modesto Jaramillo Street for the final three days of the event to help them recover their investments, though merchants have questioned the timing of this proposal.
