Trump intensifies Canada trade dispute and faces record low approval

US President Donald Trump has intensified trade tensions with Canada, labeling the exchange-rate gap between the Canadian and US dollars as “unacceptable.” His remarks on Truth Social suggest a desire to address the currency imbalance, which critics argue makes Canadian exports cheaper and widens the US trade deficit. This rhetoric follows the imposition of 50% tariffs on specific Canadian goods, including dairy, alcohol, and automobiles.

In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has vowed dollar-for-dollar retaliation, scheduled to begin on September 8. The trade dispute comes amid a decline in Canadian exports to the US and a collapse in bilateral negotiations.

Simultaneously, a Financial Times/Focaldata poll shows Trump’s domestic approval has hit a record low of 33%. Voters expressed significant dissatisfaction with the economy and cost of living, with 57% reporting worsened financial situations. The poll also indicates widespread disapproval of the Canadian tariffs and concerns that Trump’s policies may hinder Republican performance in the upcoming midterm elections.

In a separate diplomatic development, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated he intends to discuss Brazil’s Pix instant payment system with Trump during the UN General Assembly in September, following US criticism of the platform.
