Otecel to compensate Movistar and Tuenti users after Ecuador service outage
Otecel, the operator of Movistar and Tuenti in Ecuador, has announced compensation for its customers following a massive service disruption on September 9, 2026. The outage, which began around 18:00, caused nationwide intermittency in mobile data, cellular signals, and voice calls.
To remedy the situation, the company will credit additional mobile data to its more than five million users. Postpaid customers will receive up to 2 GB of extra data, valid until October 10, 2026. For prepaid customers, the amount of data will vary based on their specific active daily, weekly, or monthly plans. Users are being notified of these benefits via SMS.
This incident occurs during a period of transition for the company. Following Millicom’s acquisition of Telefónica’s stake in the Ecuadorian operations, the Movistar and Tuenti brands are expected to be replaced by Tigo in the coming months.
