Othello Cinema safety concerns prompt calls for expert assessment

Members of the Parliamentary Control Committee in Cyprus are calling for the immediate appointment of an independent expert to determine the fate of the historic Othello Cinema in Engomi. The building has been declared dangerous, yet it remains in operation, raising significant concerns regarding public safety, fire hazards, and hygiene.

During a committee session, Deputy Chairman Chrysanthos Savvides described the situation as “tragic,” noting that buildings designated as dangerous by the Department of Public Works often continue to function. The committee is investigating potential public spending and the progress of restoration plans.

Disagreements exist among the owners regarding the building's future. While some advocate for its repair, the majority shareholder, holding 85%, supports demolition. Lawmakers are urging the Department of Public Works to provide a definitive solution through an independent technician to decide whether the structure should be renovated or demolished.
