Othman Garrido faces trial for alleged Islamic State executions in Syria

Othman Garrido, a 32-year-old French national, appeared before a special assize court in Paris facing murder charges related to his time with the Islamic State in Syria. While Garrido has maintained a narrative of successful deradicalization, he faced intense questioning regarding a public execution of two Iranians in Al-Qaryatayn on September 13, 2015.

Evidence presented to the court includes photographs recovered from a phone believed to belong to Garrido's wife. These images depict him in a pickup truck transporting the victims and later posing smiling next to the bodies of the deceased alongside other militants.

Garrido denies having killed anyone or participating in any executions, claiming he only attended a celebration for the capture of the city. He stated that the event is the only one from his time in Syria, where he lived from 2012 to 2020, that continues to haunt him with nightmares.
