Othman Garrido trial begins in Paris for alleged ISIS crimes
The trial of Othman Garrido, a 32-year-old French national accused of being an ISIS executioner, has commenced at the special assize court in Paris. Garrido, who spent eight years in Iraq and Syria, faces charges of murder and assassination and could receive a life sentence.
Garrido has provided a partial confession, admitting to joining ISIS, participating in combat, and witnessing a decapitation. However, he denies being the individual in a central piece of evidence: a photograph showing a partially masked man posing with a decapitated head. The prosecution asserts this photo was recovered from a phone belonging to Garrido's wife and was provided by the United States.
Additional charges involve the 2015 execution of two Iranians in Syria. Garrido's defense, led by Antoine Ory, argues that the photographic evidence is insufficient to prove he committed the specific assassination. The trial is expected to continue through late September.
