Othon Bastos reflects on 75-year career in new play

Brazilian actor Othon Bastos is performing “Não me entrego, não!”, a theatrical production written and directed by Flávio Marinho. The show, which has been staged at Caixa Cultural Brasília, serves as a non-chronological reflection on his 75-year career in theater, cinema, and television.

Accompanied by actress Marta Paret, Bastos uses fragments of memory to explore the intersection between his personal life and his professional identity. During interviews regarding the production, the 93-year-old actor discussed themes of aging, freedom, and responsibility. He noted that while childhood provides essential lessons, the true understanding of those experiences often only arrives in old age.

Bastos emphasized the importance of personal agency, citing Jungian concepts to suggest that while individuals cannot control every event, they remain responsible for the choices they make.
