Oti livestock farmers undergo training in animal fattening techniques

Forty livestock farmers in Togo’s Oti prefecture recently completed a five-day training program in Mango focused on bovine, caprine, and ovine fattening techniques and animal marketing. The session, which concluded on August 28, was organized by the Savanes Regional Chamber of Agriculture with technical and financial support from the National Fund for Apprenticeship, Training, and Professional Development (FNAFPP).

The curriculum covered various fattening methods, animal nutrition, and commercialization strategies. Participants engaged in practical field exercises involving deworming and vaccination techniques to combat diseases such as plague. Trainers specifically recommended semi-extensive farming as a more cost-effective approach for producers.

The initiative aims to shift the local livestock sector from focusing solely on herd size to prioritizing productivity and market value. By improving animal health and weight gain within reasonable timeframes, officials hope to enhance food sovereignty, reduce reliance on animal imports from neighboring countries, and prepare local producers for export markets.
