Otis Redding: The legacy of the R&B legend

R&B legend Otis Redding, known as ‘Big O’, is remembered for his influential soulful vocal style and songwriting. Born in Macon, Georgia, Redding rose to prominence after signing with Stax Records, where he recorded hits such as ‘These Arms of Mine’, ‘Pain in My Heart’, and ‘Respect’.

In August 1967, while staying on a houseboat in Sausalito, California, Redding composed his most celebrated song, ‘(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay’. The track reflected a shift in his musical direction, influenced by the experimental sounds of The Beatles’ ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ and Bob Dylan. This period marked an attempt to expand his artistry beyond traditional soul into pop and folk influences. Redding’s career was cut short following a tragic plane crash in 1967 at the age of 26.
