Otjiwarongo housing project faces scrutiny over unoccupied units

Activists in Otjiwarongo have raised concerns regarding approximately 30 ‘Build Together’ houses in the Orwetoveni location that have reportedly remained unoccupied since their construction in 2019.

Critics are questioning the allocation of funds, noting that the units lack essential services such as water and electricity. Local activists Gorsie Ubiteb and Alex Uapingene highlighted several issues, including the small size of the structures, the absence of kitchens and toilets, and safety concerns due to a lack of emergency exits. Some beneficiaries reported being billed for water despite having no connection, while others stated the units are too small for families, forcing them to continue renting elsewhere.

Urban and Rural Development Minister James Sankwasa declined to comment on matters outside of Windhoek. Otjiwarongo Mayor Leonard Simushi stated he could not provide information as he was not in office during the 2019 project, directing inquiries to the municipality’s Chief Executive Officer.
