Otýlie Vranská murder mystery revisited after 90 years

The 1933 murder of Otýlie Vranská remains one of the most significant criminal mysteries in Czechoslovak history. The case began on the night of August 31, 1933, when dismembered body parts were discovered in suitcases being transported between Bratislava and Košice.

Vranská, a 22-year-old woman from a poor background in Brezno nad Hronom, had moved to Prague in search of a better life. On the night of her death, she was reportedly meeting a man she believed was a lieutenant who had promised her marriage and employment.

Investigators faced massive public interest and a surge of nearly 5,000 anonymous tips. A primary suspect emerged as Josef Pěkný, a respected legionnaire and war hero who had an intimate relationship with Vranská, though authorities were unable to secure a conviction.
