Ott Tänak inches toward WRC comeback as Toyota tests him for 2027 season

2019 World Rally Championship champion Ott Tänak, who left the series at the end of last season, has been taking part in Toyota’s development programme for the new 2027 WRC car. He opened the recent Rally di Roma Capitale in Italy driving a Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 and later tested the top‑spec GR Yaris Rally1 in Finland, gathering data for the upcoming 2027 calendar‑change that will move the Italian round from Sardinia to Rome.

Tänak, now acting as a test driver for the Japanese manufacturer, said there is “no plan at the moment” for a competitive return, but his increasing involvement has heightened speculation that he could re‑enter the championship for the 2027 season.
