Ottawa City Council considers renaming Trump Avenue
The Ottawa City Council has taken a unanimous first step toward renaming Trump Avenue, a residential street in the Central Park neighborhood that has been named after US President Donald Trump for approximately 25 years.
The move comes amid escalating trade tensions between Canada and the United States, including reciprocal tariffs and a US executive order directing the government to refer to Lake Ontario as ‘Lake America’. Local officials, including Mayor Mark Sutcliffe and Councillor Riley Brockington, expressed that maintaining the name has become an embarrassment in the Canadian capital.
Proposed replacement names include ‘Obama Avenue’, ‘Ontario Avenue’, ‘Canada Avenue’, ‘Pelosi Avenue’, and ‘Taco Avenue’—the latter being a reference to the acronym ‘Trump Always Chickens Out’. A formal name change requires support from more than half of the street's residents followed by a public consultation process.
