Ottawa City Council moves to rename Trump Street
The Ottawa City Council has unanimously voted to begin the process of renaming ‘Trump Street,’ a residential street in the Central Park neighborhood that has carried the name of U.S. President Donald Trump for approximately 25 years.
Local officials cited escalating trade tensions and verbal attacks from the U.S. President toward Canada as reasons for the change, with some council members describing the current name as a ‘shame.’ The move follows a recent executive order by Trump requiring U.S. official documents to refer to Lake Ontario as ‘Lake America.’
Proposed replacement names include ‘Obama Street,’ ‘Ontario Street,’ ‘Canada Street,’ and ‘Taco Street.’ The latter is a satirical reference to the acronym for the phrase ‘Trump Always Clogs Up.’ Other suggestions include ‘Canada Goose Street’ and ‘Bay of Mexico Street.’
