Ottawa Humane Society expands SAFE program for pets in crisis

The Ottawa Humane Society has implemented major improvements to its Sheltering Animals From Emergencies (SAFE) program. The initiative is designed to provide longer-term support for pet owners facing crises, preventing them from having to relinquish their animals to the shelter.

Under the expanded program, pets in the SAFE program receive essential vaccinations, sterilization, microchips, and health and behavior support at no cost to the owner. The program relies on foster volunteers who provide housing for animals when longer-term support is required.

Data from the organization shows a growing need in the Ottawa region. Between April 2023 and March 2024, the program supported 16 pets, whereas since April 2024, it has already supported 31 pets.
