Ottawa Redblacks host Saskatchewan Roughriders in pivotal CFL clash

Redblacks head coach Ryan Dinwiddie said the team must stop the “self‑inflicted wounds” that have plagued its start to the season and take ownership of its performance. Quarterback Jake Maier, returning from a year with Saskatchewan, will start his fourth straight game, while newcomer McLeod Bethel‑Thompson serves as his backup. Ottawa also adds veteran receiver Eugene Lewis and defensive backs Alonzo Addae and Adrian Frye for the contest.

The Roughriders enter the game leading the league with an average of 472.7 yards per game. They rely on kickoff return specialist Kalil Pimpleton, who tops the CFL in return yards, and saw Trevor Harris throw his first interception of the season. Wide receivers Samuel Emilus and Jaylen Johnson and defensive lineman Ali Saad will sit out.

Saskatchewan also has a potential new contributor in Mathew Sexton, a first‑year receiver who could punt‑return if James Letcher Jr. remains sidelined with an elbow injury. Sexton, released by Ottawa after rookie camp, signed with the Roughriders three days later and has previously logged a 53‑yard missed‑field‑goal return in the UFL and an 83‑yard punt‑return touchdown in 2025. He says he is ready to prove himself against the team that first gave him a chance in Canada.
