Otto Waalkes debuts as children's book author at age 78

German comedian, musician, and director Otto Waalkes has released his debut children's book titled ‘Karl, der kleine Ottifant. Ein Rüssel wie kein anderer’. At 78 years old, Waalkes both wrote and illustrated the book, which is published by Oetinger-Verlag.

The rhyming story is intended for children aged four and up. It follows Karl, a young elephant with an unusually long trunk that frequently gets knotted. Through an adventure in the steppe and jungle, Karl discovers that his unique physical trait is actually a ‘superpower’ that helps him overcome obstacles.

Waalkes noted that his experience performing for audiences has shown him that children laugh at the same things as adults. In addition to the book, a one-man audio play featuring Waalkes is being released simultaneously.
