Ottoman Empire and the Battle of Mohács

The Battle of Mohács on August 29, 1526, served as a fatal turning point in Central European history. During the engagement, the Ottoman army led by Sultan Suleiman I defeated the forces of King Louis II Jagiellon, resulting in the death of the young monarch and the collapse of the medieval Hungarian state.

The defeat created a power vacuum and a strategic shift that lasted for over a century. The former kingdom disintegrated into three distinct geopolitical entities: Royal Hungary in the west and north, which fell under Habsburg control; the central plains, including Buda, which were incorporated into the Ottoman administration as the Eyalet of Buda; and the Principality of Transylvania in the east, which maintained autonomy as an Ottoman vassal.

This period established a permanent state of military threat in the region and fostered a long-standing perception of Ottoman military invincibility among Christian commanders.
