Ottoman expansion and the Battle of Lepanto context

Historical accounts detail the escalating tensions between the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Venice leading up to the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. Following the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople, Sultan Selim II targeted Cyprus, which was under Venetian influence. The siege of Famagusta resulted in the death of Venetian commander Marcantonio Bragadin after Ottoman forces violated surrender terms.

The conflict had significant local impacts in Rimini, where residents lived in fear of Ottoman naval incursions. Local figures, including members of the Malatesta family, were caught in the conflict; Ercole Malatesta was wounded and captured during the defense of Cyprus, while Giacomo Malatesta was imprisoned for eleven months before being released through French intervention. The presence of Ottoman vessels near Italian ports caused widespread alarm among local sailors and merchants.
