Oudtshoorn selected for Heritage Day after venue relocation disputes

The venue for South Africa’s National Heritage Day celebrations has been moved to Oudtshoorn following a series of last-minute relocations that have sparked political tension between national and provincial governments.

Originally intended to coincide with the uMkhosi weLembe celebrations in KwaZulu-Natal, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie decided the Zulu nation’s commemoration should have its own separate stage. This decision prompted the event to be moved to George, Western Cape. However, the venue was subsequently changed again to Oudtshoorn after the national department claimed George could not accommodate the event on short notice.

The Western Cape Government has criticized the process, with Cultural Affairs and Sport MEC Ricardo Mackenzie describing the shifts as “improvisation at the taxpayer’s expense” and warning that the national day should not become a “political football.” The relocation has also drawn scrutiny regarding the ability to manage security, infrastructure, and municipal services for an event of this scale on such short notice.
