Ouessant and Cíes Islands highlighted as wild European coastal escapes

Several European coastal destinations are gaining attention for their preserved, wild landscapes that offer alternatives to traditional mass tourism.

In France, the island of Ouessant in Brittany is noted for its rugged Atlantic environment. Characterized by its lack of major road networks and its dramatic cliffs, the island serves as a significant site for ornithology due to migratory bird species. Key landmarks include the Créac’h lighthouse, one of Europe’s most powerful, and the coastal GR® trail which spans approximately 45 kilometers.

In Spain, the Cíes Islands located off the coast of Galicia offer a similar sense of isolation. As part of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia Maritime-Terrestrial National Park, the archipelago consists of Monteagudo, Faro, and San Martiño islands. The area is protected to preserve its ecosystems, resulting in a lack of large hotels or major roads. The Rodas beach is particularly noted for its clear waters and fine sand, often compared to tropical destinations.
