Oulu and ABO Energy partner on green hydrogen plant

The City of Oulu and ABO Energy have signed a cooperation agreement to advance the planning and development of a large-scale green hydrogen production facility in northern Finland. The project is situated in the Pyyryväinen industrial area, which covers approximately 41 hectares.

The facility's electrolysis capacity could be expanded to 600 megawatts through two or three development phases. Beyond hydrogen production, the project explores the creation of downstream products, including synthetic methanol and sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF). Additionally, waste heat generated during the production process is intended to be integrated into the local district heating network.

This agreement serves as a milestone for the project's development, establishing a framework for joint work regarding spatial planning, permitting processes, and necessary technical studies. A final investment decision will be made following further technical assessments and commercial reviews. Oulu aims to strengthen its position as a hydrogen hub within the Baltic Sea region.
