Oumar Wade appointed head of ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff
Senegalese Rear Admiral Oumar Wade has assumed leadership of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff (CCDS) in Abuja. This appointment marks a shift toward maritime-focused military governance in West Africa, addressing security concerns such as piracy and trafficking in the Gulf of Guinea.
The CCDS serves as the technical body responsible for preparing military decisions for defense ministers and heads of state. Wade’s tenure begins during a critical period as the organization works toward establishing a permanent anti-terrorist brigade. This initiative, stemming from a December 2023 summit, was initially estimated to require approximately 5,000 personnel and an annual budget of roughly $2.6 billion, though full funding remains a challenge due to insufficient national contributions.
