Oura faces class-action lawsuit over sleep tracking accuracy

Oura, a prominent manufacturer of smart rings, is facing a class-action lawsuit filed by the Clarkson Law Firm in San Francisco. The lawsuit alleges that the company misled consumers regarding the accuracy of its sleep-tracking capabilities.

Plaintiffs claim the devices are unable to measure the essential physiological signals required to identify sleep stages, such as brain electrical activity or eye movements. Instead, the suit alleges that Oura relies on AI-generated estimates that are essentially guesswork, with one filing suggesting accuracy levels comparable to a coin flip. The complaint cites instances where users reported feeling exhausted despite the app providing an “optimal” sleep score.

Oura has denied the allegations, maintaining that its technology is backed by scientific research and peer-reviewed studies. The company emphasizes that its rings use heart rate, temperature, and movement to estimate sleep stages and clarifies that the device is not a medical tool and should not replace clinical polysomnography. The lawsuit seeks monetary compensation for over 100 class members, totaling more than $5 million, and requests an injunction against what it describes as deceptive marketing.
