Oura faces US lawsuit over sleep tracking accuracy claims

Oura, the manufacturer of smart rings, is facing a class action lawsuit in a San Francisco federal court regarding the accuracy of its sleep tracking features. The lawsuit, filed by the Clarkson Law Firm, alleges that the company made deceptive claims about its device's ability to measure sleep stages.

The complaint argues that while Oura markets its rings as being capable of seeing what only a hospital sleep lab can see, the device lacks the necessary physical sensors, such as scalp electrodes or eye sensors, to directly measure brain activity and rapid eye movement (REM). Instead, the lawsuit claims the device relies on AI-generated estimates that may have a “coin flip’s chance of being correct.”

Oura has rejected the accusations, defending its algorithms and stating that its smart ring is not intended to replace medical tools or clinical diagnoses. The legal action seeks to stop what plaintiffs describe as false advertising and to provide compensation to customers who purchased the rings, priced at $300 and up, based on these alleged claims.
