Oura investigates brain hemorrhage detection for smart rings

Oura is investigating whether its smart ring can be used to detect brain hemorrhages. The company's CEO, Tom Hale, announced the investigation after billionaire investor Bill Ackman suggested such a feature could have been life-saving for his daughter.

Ackman, the founder of Pershing Square Capital Management, shared that data from his daughter Lucy’s Oura Ring helped medical professionals determine that her hemorrhage occurred around 9 a.m., many hours before she was found unconscious and rushed into surgery. Ackman expressed a wish that the device could provide alerts for such medical events or notify family members.

In response, Hale stated he has directed his team to explore whether the ring could have predicted or detected the event to alert the wearer. While the Oura Ring tracks metrics like heart rate, sleep, and body temperature, the company notes that it is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose or prevent medical conditions.
