Spain records 6% rise in gender‑based violence complaints in first quarter 2026

Spain's judicial statistics show a 6.36% increase in gender‑based violence complaints during the first quarter of 2026, reaching 50,911 reports compared with the same period in 2025. The number of women filing complaints rose 3.75% to 45,220, while protection‑order requests fell 2.5% and approved orders dropped 1.8%.

Regional data reveal divergent trends: Valencia saw a 7.8% drop in complaints, whereas Extremadura recorded a 23% surge and Castilla‑La Mancha a 33.5% increase. Castilla‑La Mancha also noted a 23.1% rise in victims, while Castilla‑León posted the lowest victim rate nationwide at 11.4 per 10,000 women. Nationwide, 81.78% of gender‑based violence cases resulted in convictions.

Authorities have launched several awareness campaigns, including Andalusia's summer outreach promoting the 900 200 999 hotline and the Generalitat's reinforcement of support services. Municipal initiatives in Mexico's Benito Juárez and Huelva's divorce‑case reduction illustrate parallel efforts to address gender‑based violence in other jurisdictions.
