Ourense rural security faces staffing shortages and limited station hours
Rural security in the province of Ourense, Spain, is facing significant challenges due to personnel shortages and limited operational hours. Out of 38 Guardia Civil stations in the province, only four, located in O Barco, Verín, Xinzo de Limia, and O Carballiño, provide 24-hour service. The remaining 34 stations offer in-person public service only during mornings, a few days a week.
The Professional Justice Association of the Guardia Civil (JUCIL) reports that 102 positions remain unfilled. In some municipalities, such as Esgos and Bande, stations operate with only a single officer or a very small team. This lack of proximity has reportedly led some citizens to avoid reporting crimes, such as thefts at the Lobios fair, because the travel distance to the nearest station outweighs the value of the stolen goods. The situation also increases vulnerability for victims of gender-based violence who face difficulties accessing local assistance.
In Trasmiras, the local station was closed in December following a report citing severe occupational health risks due to the deplorable state of the facilities. Local authorities have expressed frustration over the lack of technical explanations regarding the closure.
